Right to Float: April 12, 2006

This month’s focus is on the “right to float” down our rivers.  Locals and tourists alike take for granted the ability to hop in a raft or kayak and just take off, but there are big legal and practical questions about private property rights that some feel have never been fully resolved.  We’ve all herd some version of “it’s ok to float across private land, but you can’t touch the bottom of the river.”  However, there’s more to it than that. And of course, rules are different from state to state. In Montana, fishermen can wade in the ricer as long as they don’t wander outside the high water mark.  That’s not true here in Colorado.  Join us and learn about the history and the future of this critical issue.  Access to rivers in Colorado is important to our local economy – not to mention a whole boat load of local boaters.
